The road from newbie to successful mathematics teacher is long and bumpy. Far too many people end up at a dead-end and never reach their goal.
To become a successful math teacher:
1. You must LOVE math.
2. You must LOVE kids. For the age you have chosen (elementary, middle school, or high school), you must love them even when they aren't being particularly lovable; and they need to be able to tell that you love them.
3. You must learn from your mistakes. You will make many mistakes, but treat each mistake as the learning experience it is. You are unlikely to make too many math mistakes, but you are very likely to put your foot in your mouth. Be honest with your students and apologize.
4. You must learn to build a good rapport with both students and parents. This is not always easy to do with parents because they often have their own negative feelings about school. But, parents must become your partners in educating their children. Always treat both parents and students with the utmost respect. Never, never, never make a student feel humiliated. Students generally will make you sorry if you have embarrassed someone, put someone on the spot, or in any way been unfair. If you have a tendency to use sarcasm, stop right now.
5. Always remember that you are NOT their peer-you are their teacher.
6. You must keep improving your teaching skills, your classroom management skills, and your knowledge base. Take all the classes, seminars, workshops, etc. that you can. (Take them for college credit rather than district credit. If you move, you will likely lose those district credits, but college credits move with you.) Find out who the specialists in your subject are and attend their seminars. Learn from your colleagues. Create routines that let you make effective use of your class period. You must make every student feel that you have confidence in their ability to learn.
7. You must become a good tutor and make yourself available to your students at lunch, planning periods, and after school. Your time is their time.
8. A teacher who can only explain concepts one way cannot be a successful math teacher. Different learners need different explanations.
9. You must become fast and accurate at task analysis. When students give you a blank stare-no one understands what you just explained-it is generally because they are missing a pre-requisite skill. You must very quickly and thoroughly assess exactly what skills must be mastered before they can understand what you just presented. You may need to do a little checking for understanding. The missing skill(s) need to be taught or re-taught before they can understand the new material.
10. You must constantly be relating mathematics to their real life and stressing just how important mathematics is to their future in this global economy.
Notice that the majority of these items are not subject specific. These will make any teacher successful at any subject. If your area is math and you do all of these, you will become a successful math teacher!
