Fact: Lean People Eat More Fiber
The link between a lack of fiber in the diet and being overweight was obvious to Canadian researchers in 1995, when they conducted a clinical study at University Hospital in London, Ontario. In this study, the researchers examined fiber intake of three weight groups: normal, moderately obese, and severely obese. Each group contained fifty people. The researchers kept detailed three-day food records that included everything each person ate, and then they analyzed how much fiber was contained in each day's food intake. Those in the normal group consumed significantly higher amounts of fiber-an average of 18.8 grams a day-whereas the moderately obese consumed 13.3 grams, and the severely obese 13.7 grams. The researchers concluded that dietitians and physicians need to emphasize the significance of a high-fiber diet to their obese patients.
